Arizona History
Arizona’s earliest inhabitants were the Indian races such as the Anasazi, Hopi, and Pueblo. Later on they were joined by the Navajo, Apache, Pima and others. When European explorers began making their way to the lands of New World, they often found their way north from the regions known as South America into the area now called Arizona. Some of the early explorers of the region were Spanish explorers such as Estcanico of Spain, followed by conquistadors like Coronado. As discoveries of gold and other resources were made, Arizona began to be inundated by more Europeans.
The Spanish invasion of Arizona ultimately resulted in many battles between the Indians and the newcomers before the US took control of Northern Arizona at the end of the Mexican-American War (1848). Later on, in 1863, the Arizona territory was established. Also, during the 1800s, Arizona’s population boomed due to the discovery of gold in the Colorado River, then later in the Gila River. As white man invaded Indian lands, Arizona’s original inhabitants were crowded and basic survival resources diminished. Over time, the Indians were forced to move to reservations. As was typical of situations like this, the Indians battled to maintain their lands. But white man prevailed and soon had taken over most of the territory. Despite their loss of lands, it should be noted that today there are 23 Indian tribes living in the state of Arizona.
Arizona continued to develop, eventually gaining its statehood in February of 1912. Its growth continued, with its population exploding during the 1940s. With that growth came more industries and businesses. Today, Arizona’s primary resources are farming, crops, livestock, computer and electronics, and mining. Of course, with its many beautiful locations like the Grand Canyon, the Vermilion Cliffs and the Mohave as well as spas, golfing and vacation resorts tourism is also a prime industry.
